Ageing does not have to be a trial – many of us live happily and healthily until the end of our days – our bodies often though get in the way of us doing what we want to do when we want to do it and sensible and practical compromises must be made. We just have to accept that if we’re going to carry on, we have to make adjustments and just accept it as fact.
Case History 1
Rosalind is a keen and good golfer – she’s in her mid 70s and years of playing sport are playing havoc with her knees. She’s been told to lose weight to take the pressure off her knees – and – to her great relief – losing a stone mostly dealt with the problem. Still, 18 holes on a golf course were tough on her – easy – a good friend recommended, rather than cut down on her play, she should book a golf buggy – which she did and 3 years later, she is till scoring better than most of the other members – little things mean a lot and please don’t let pride interfere with keeping us independent and fulfilled.
Case History 2
Prue is 68, she’s aways loved clothes and still turns heads – just lately she’s been devasted to find that she has a sensitive bladder and leaks a little at very inconvenient moments.
She’s spoken to her GP who’s arranged for her to see the continence promotion nurse and she has some exercises to strengthen down below – they’re just not having that much immediate effect – so she needs to get to the chemist or supermarket and get hold of some reliable inco knickers or pads – not an item of luxury – but oh so liberating!!
Ps – if Prue continues to have problems, she might be able to persuade her GP to refer her to a specialist physio who can help
